Factors Associated with the Incidence of Low Birth Weight (LBW) in the Working Area of Kuranji Public Health Center, Padang City in 2026
xiii +63 Pages, 10 tables, 2 figures, 12 attchments
ABSTRACT
Low Birth Weight (LBW) is a global health issue that contributes significantly to neonatal mortality and morbidity. UNICEF data (2025) indicates that approximately 14–15% of live births worldwide involve LBW; in Padang City, the Kuranji Community Health Center (Puskesmas) service area recorded the highest prevalence at 6.3%. This study aimed to identify factors associated with the incidence of LBW in the Kuranji Community Health Center service area, Padang City, in 2026.
This quantitative study employed a cross-sectional design and was conducted from March to August 2026, with data collection taking place between July 23 and July 30, 2026. The population consisted of all mothers with infants aged 0–12 months in the Kuranji Community Health Center service area (N=425), and a sample of 81 mothers was selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected via questionnaires, interviews, and observations, and were analyzed using univariate and bivariate methods (Chi-Square test).
The results showed that 35.8% of infants had LBW, 38.3% of mothers had short interpregnancy intervals, 34.6% were at risk regarding parity, and 38.3% were at risk regarding maternal age at delivery. Bivariate analysis revealed significant associations between LBW incidence and interpregnancy interval (p-value 0.019), parity (p-value 0.015), and maternal age at delivery (p-value 0.019). It is concluded that interpregnancy interval, parity, and maternal age at delivery are associated with the incidence of Low Birth Weight in the Kuranji Community Health Center service area, Padang City. Recommendations are made for the Community Health Center (Maternal and Child Health program) to provide mothers with information regarding these risk factors to enable early anticipation of LBW, and for future researchers to investigate other variables such as nutritional
status, lifestyle, and living environment..
