The Relationship Between Work Posture with Musculoskeletal
Disorders (MSDs) Complaints Among Waste Collectors in Padang City in 2026
xii + 72 Pages, 19 Tables, 13 Figures, 11 Appendices
ABSTRACT
The city of Padang is the largest producer of waste; in 2025 alone, it generated 244,179 metric tons of waste. The total amount of waste generated by the city of Padang is approximately 600 metric tons per day. Waste collection is still carried out manually, which is known to pose a risk for musculoskeletal complaints. This study aims to determine the relationship between work posture and work duration and musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among waste collectors in the city of Padang in 2026.
This quantitative study, using a cross-sectional design, was conducted along waste collection routes and at waste transfer stations in the city of Padang from March to August 2026. The population consisted of 131 waste collection workers operating dump trucks and arm roll trucks, with a sample of 62 individuals selected using accidental sampling. Work posture was assessed using the Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) method, while work duration and MSD complaints were assessed using the Nordic Body Map (NBM) questionnaire and interviews. The data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analyses with the chi-square test.
The results of the study show that the majority of respondents experienced severe MSDs (77.4%), had risky work postures (80.6%), and worked for non-risky durations (53.2%). Work postures and work duration were found to be significantly associated with MSDs (p-value = 0.000) and (p-value = 0.014), respectively, among waste collectors.
There is a significant association between work posture and work duration and complaints of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among garbage collectors in Padang City in 2026. It is hoped that the Padang City Environmental Agency will collaborate with the Health Agency to provide Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) training on ergonomic work postures and encourage workers to stretch their muscles before and during work breaks
